Rep Escapes Lynching In Cross-River

With less than 24 hours to the conduct of rescheduled National Assembly election, a member of the House of Representatives, Chief Bassey Ewa, narrowly escaped lynching following a face-off between his supporters and that of his political rival, Chief Patrick Okomiso.

Okomiso lost the Peoples Democratic Party primaries to Ewa in January under controversial circumstance.

It was gathered that Okomiso’s supporters had coverged on his residence late Wednesday to welcome him (Okomiso) back home in Nko, Yakurr Local Government after a long stay in Abuja when the incident occurred.

According to an eye witness, Ewa was said to have visited Okomiso’s residence same day with his supporters on a campaign/peace mission and both men were said to have met privately to discuss the need for peace and chat a common front for the party ahead of Saturday’s election.

Trouble, however, started when Ewa and his supporters made to go and an object, suspected to be a charm, was alleged to have fallen off the pocket of one of his supporters as he tried to jump into one of the vehicles that were in the long convoy of Ewa.

The eye witness, who craved anonymity said, “This incident infuriated the supporters of Okomiso, who blocked the entrance to their master’s house, insisting that the lawmaker would not leave the premises alive as they concluded that the charm was meant to hurt Okomiso and his supporters.”
