The violent protests that erupted in some parts of the North after the results of the April 16 presidential election were released have affected prices of major food items across the country.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the prices of beans, yam, tomato, pepper and other soup ingredients had risen by about 150 per cent since President Goodluck Jonathan was declared the winner of the election.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said that the two major national agricultural programmes — Operation Feed the Nation and Green Revolution—implemented by the Federal Government between 1975 and 1983 failed because they did not take off properly.

He said at the closing session of a one-day Presidential Summit on Job Creation in Abuja that it was regrettable that several years after the programmes were implemented, Nigeria was still an importer of staple food items, especially rice.
