| Camping being interviewed in 2011 |
Going by Camping’s calculation, based on the biblical calendar, the world will come to an end today, May 21, 2011.
While believers and nonbelievers alike are mulling the probability of Camping’s prophesy, clerics in Nigeria and other parts of the world are emphatic that May 21 will come and go without any Rapture.
They are unanimous in their belief that no man knows the day the Lord will come.
President, Eclectic Network, Lagos, Rev. Moses Iloh, in an interview said that Camping’s prophecy was not biblical. He was emphatic that God had not revealed the day to any man.
He said, “The Bible says that no human will know the day when the world will be over. So, he (Camping) is not saying what is true.
“He must be quoting The Bible out of context because Christ was asked the question, ‘When shall this come to an end?’ He said nobody, not even the angels know. Only God knows. So, I don’t think it’s true and nothing is going to happen tomorrow (today).”
And what if something happens? Iloh was asked, and he replied, “Then we go to heaven or hell, that’s it. Those who are going to heaven will go to heaven and those who are going to hell will go to hell. But I don’t think anything will happen tomorrow. You better believe me.
“God will never do a thing like that. The Bible says, when the Lord is coming, he’ll come like a thief. He’ll just come in quietly.”
Similarly, Sheik Habeebullahi Adam Al-Ilory of the Morkaz Arabic and Islamic Training Centre, Agege, Lagos, said that only God had the absolute knowledge of when the world would come to an end.
Concerning Camping’s prediction, he asked, “What signs did the man who predicted the end of the world tomorrow (today) see? There must be signs before such a remarkable event can take place. It is not like tsunami or any other natural disasters.
“In Islam, we are made to believe that it is only God who has the absolute knowledge of when the world will come to an end.”
He noted some of the signs that would precede the end of the world, which have not come to pass, and urged all Nigerians to disregard Camping’s prophecy.
He said, “There are many signs which the Holy Prophet mentioned, like the sun rising from the West instead of the East. And even at that, it is not that the sun will start rising from the West today and the world ends tomorrow.
“There is also the appearance of the anti-Christ, which is called dajal; some claim that has started to happen. But whatever the case, such things will take thousands of years and God does not share the secret with anybody, however highly placed.
“Even when somebody is about to die, the person may be seeing some signs in his sleep in form of dreams, but the exact time when he gives up the ghost is not known to anyone except God. I urge Nigerians and Muslims in particular to discard the idea that the world will come to an end tomorrow (today); it will not happen.”
According to Robert Jeffress of the First Baptist Dallas, USA, Camping has been wrong before and he will be wrong again.
Jeffress, commenting on Camping’s campaign on the Cable News Network, said, “Don’t you worry. Camping’s been wrong before, and he’ll be wrong again... predictions about the end of the world always lead some people to make foolish decisions. When a self-professed prophet named Edgar Whisenant predicted that the rapture would occur in 1988, a couple I know responded by charging their Visa card to the limit with a trip to Disney World, believing the bank would be left with the bill once they had left the Magic Kingdom for God’s kingdom. Obviously, things didn’t go as planned.”
