Reps’ll redeem House image – New Speaker

New Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, has assured Nigerians that the House will not repeat the mistakes of the past, which cost it the confidence of the electorate.

He also called for a review of the federating units in the country to allow for the development of capacities and abilities.

“We must be a listening assembly of elected representatives.

“We should review how we federate as a nation with the aim of achieving more cumulative efficiencies in the federating units, based on comparative endowment advantages,” he said.

In his acceptance speech, Waziri-Tambuwal admitted that the integrity of the House had been called to question, promising a turnaround.

He appealed to Nigerians for forgiveness over the mistakes of the past.

The speaker added, “We accept responsibility for our failures and ask Nigerians for their forgiveness.

“Mindful of the lessons of the past, we will open a new chapter.

“We will commence a new era of responsibility. This House will act responsibly in all its endeavours.

“We will be responsive, transparent and accountable in all we do.

“We must recognise one common truth -we are the people’s representatives; the primary focus of our legislative activities should be about the constituents.”

Waziri-Tambuwal noted that the new House was keen on building a united Nigeria that paid little attention to the region of birth.

“We must work to redeem the efforts of our political predecessors. We must work to redeem Nigeria.

“We must stand united in our efforts and sacrifices to build a worthy future for our people,” he added.

He said, his victory, in spite of ‘our partisan divide’, demonstrated the resolve of the House to strengthen the independence of the legislature.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that many journalists were prevented from entering the NASS complex to cover the inauguration of the 7th Assembly on Monday.

The journalists were told by the security men that the decision was an order from a superior officer whose name they did not mention.
