Family seeks protection for Al-Mustapha

THE Al-Mustapha family in Kano has urged the Federal Government to beef up security around Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, the former Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha.

Al-Mustapha is facing trial over the murder of Kudirat Abiola, then wife of the presumed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, who also died under mysterious circumstance in detention. Since the renewed trial began last Monday, Al-Mustapha has named several living and dead eminent Nigerians of playing certain roles in the scuttling of the mandate given to Abiola, his death and that of Abacha.

Spokesperson for the family, Alhaji Hadi Al-Mustapha, specifically pleaded with President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure the safety of his immediate elder brother.

Hadi Al-Mustapha told reporters in Kano that the life of the former CSO is now under serious threat in view of the shocking revelations he made at the court.

He said: “There have been rumours that he would be killed, and with the revelations he made in court, we are now at a heightened state of fear. Truly, we are worried because in every rumour, there is an element of truth.

“Our major worry now is about the health and safety of Major Hamza Al-Mustapha. We have been receiving messages that there are plots to assassinate him in prison. We therefore urged the Federal Government to beef up security around Al-Mustapha, who has been in incarceration for over 13 years.”

At the Lagos High Court, Igbosere, Al-Mustapha will today be cross-examined by the prosecuting counsel led by Lawal Pedro (SAN).

At the conclusion of Al-Mustapha’s evidence in chief led by his counsel, Olalekan Ojo, last Thursday, the trial Judge, Justice Mojisola Dada, urged the prosecution to start their cross examination.

But Pedro citing tiredness and exhaustion, urged the court for an adjournment for the cross examination, leading the judge to adjourn till Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to allow the prosecution have three days for his cross-examination.

Al-Mustapha at the conclusion of his testimony, denied any involvement in the killing of Kudriat, stating that the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Nuhu Ribadu was under instruction to kill him.

According to him, it was former Inspector- General of Police, Mr. Mike Okiro, who was then the Commissioner of Police in Lagos, saved him from being killed by Ribadu.

Mustapha, whose counsel, Olalekan Ojo led in the concluding part of his evidence in the court presided by Justice Mojisola Dada, amidst tight security provided by men of the State Security Services (SSS), Police, Prison warders, said his trial was being done as pay back for stopping the political ambition of some political class.

According to him, he became a victim of the political class right from the death of Abacha till date because of the role he played as to which region should rule Nigeria and those who wanted Abiola killed, Abubarkar removed , saw him as an enemy.
