Pro-Salami protests spread to Abuja

The gale of protests against the suspension of former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami, and his subsequent replacement by Justice Dalhatu Adamu in acting capacity spread to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Wednesday.

As early as 7am, human rights activists, under the aegis of The National Frontiers, gathered at the federal secretariat to protest what they described as injustice.

Spotting white T-shirts, the placards-wielding protesters marched to the main entrance of the National Assembly before returning to the federal secretariat where they were later stopped by policemen drafted to the scene.

The armed riot policemen conveyed to the scene in about 10 police patrol vans quickly formed a barricade in front of the Ministry of Education, adjacent the secretariat’s canteen thereby preventing the protesters from surge forward.

The policemen, led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Wilson Inaligwu, later engaged the leaders of the protesters in a dialogue.

They retrieved the placards from the protesters and loaded them inside the trunk of a patrol van marked CT 756 A11.

The security operatives also led about three leaders of the protesters into another patrol van marked NPF 2128 C.

But when accosted by journalists, Inaligwu denied arresting any of the protesters.

When confronted with the fact that some of them had just been led into a police van, he said, “That is not an arrest. If we wanted to arrest them, we would have done that at the gate of the National Assembly.

“There was no arrest made. Our purpose of being here is to ensure that the environment is cleared so that people who are going about their lawful duties are not disturbed.”
