Abia Police, ABSU students differ on Gang Rape video

THE Abia State Police Command and some students of Abia State University have disagreed over the gang rape of a student by five suspected cult members.

While the police are insisting that no such incident took place, the students maintain that the gang rape of the student was real.

Gang Rape is “hypothetical and unfounded” - Police

Speaking in a telephone interview on Thursday, the Abia State Police Commissioner, Mr. Bala Hasan, said the police could not investigate an issue that was “hypothetical and unfounded.”

He explained that he had already discussed the matter with the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Chibuzor Ogbuagu, who claimed that the gang-raping of a student did not happen in the institution.

“It is not a true story. We don’t investigate anything that is hypothetical. It is what we call extemporaneous prevarication. I have met with the vice chancellor of the university and he said there was nothing like that,” Hasan said.

But two students from the university said they had watched the video clip of the rape incident and believed that it actually happened.

One of the students, who identified himself as Victor, is quoted as saying the rape victim was a student of Imo State University, who visited one of the suspects in his hostel.

“The IMSU student got to know one of the suspects through 2Go (an internet programme) and decided to visit him in Abia.

“On getting to the guy’s hostel, she met about seven guys in the room. They raped her eventually. That is what we heard,” he said.

Victor added that it was wrong for the police to describe the incident as false, saying, “The video is there and many ABSU students have watched it. The police cannot say it is not true.”

Similarly, another student, who identified himself as Emeka, said after watching the video clip it became clear to him that the incident had actually happened.

“I have watched the video. It was like a blue film and the guys showed they were wicked. But the girl is not from Abia State University,” Emeka, who didn’t want to speak much on the matter, said.
