Okorocha, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate in the elections, won the support of Imo indigenes, who on their part, enjoined the electorate in the state to ensure that Okorocha is fully endorsed.
The meeting convened under the auspices of a group, the Imo United China, last weekend, at the Chinese Restaurant in Baiyun District, Guangzhou, China, and under the chairmanship of Mr. Celestine Ebere Etunmi from Mbaitoli, drew a large attendance of Imo indigenes resident in the Far East Asian country.
The endorsement of Okorocha followed a unanimous vote by the Imo indigenes present who subsequently called on the electorate in the state to vote en masse for the candidacy of Okorocha as the voting made Okorocha the candidate choice of all Imolites in China.
The meeting which agreed on the need to institute a credible leader for the state, maintained that this had become imperative since, as they observed, the state had dropped in terms of rate of development since the administration of former governor, late Dr Sam Mbakwe.
"We need a candidate that can be able to write the best leadership record since the creation of Imo State, in the governorship of Dr Sam Onunaka Mbakwe. At that time, people of Imo State were as proud as the British people. Imo State was the cleanest state in Nigeria. There were no crimes like killings and marketing of human parts, 419; if you make your money abroad or anywhere in the country, you'll be attracted to come home and spend it and enjoy your hard labour.
"Infrastructure was better than what is obtainable today, as even the village farmers were being supported with fertilizers and other things, the assembly noted," they lamented.
According to the assembly, these considerations and factors informed the unanimous vote of confidence on the candidacy of Okorocha to reposition the fortunes of the state as against other candidates contesting in the same gubernatorial elections in the state.
Earlier, Mr Markson Onwukwe from Amigbo, urged the members to beware of candidates who specialize in making "so much promises on radio, television and newspapers only" pointing out that the state needs a leader like Mbakwe.
The meeting in addition to the endorsement of Okorocha also resolved that on the issue of the long standing zoning arrangement in the state, the incumbent governor did not deliver and hence another four years is a long time for the state to be left to nothingness.
The choice of Okorocha by Imo indigenes in the country is also based on the former's pledge to abide by the zoning formula whereby he would run for one term and hand over to the Owerri zone, explained Mr. Uche Basil who had voted in favour of Okorocha at the meeting.
Mr. Cypirian O. Anya in expressing happiness over the turn of events at the meeting, called for donations in support of the favoured candidate, which plea in turn realized the sum of $10, 150 in support of the Chief Rochas Okorocha's campaign.
Commenting, Mr. Festus Mbisiogu from Mbano, said the conduct of the Imo indigenes present was a testament to the fact that the Imo people in China are as united as they bear the name Imo United, just as he assured that their efforts to institute a credible leader in the state will not be regretted.
The Imo indigenes meeting in China was graced by prominent residents in the country like Chief Ikechukwu Ogbonna from Arondizuogu, the chairman of the Elders Council; Mr. Patrick Alia from Obowu, Mr. John Chimezie from Uruala; Mr. Uchenna Basil from Ideato, Stanley Agbaso from Mbano and all the other executive members of Imo United in China - Daily Champion: 9th April 2011
