Group breaks away from Boko Haram

There are indications that the outlawed Islamic sect, Boko Haram, has broken into factions, indicating that it is weakening.

The sect has been engaged in a bloody campaign of bombings and killings in parts of the North in the past few months, including the June deadly blast at the headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja.

The Nigeria Police and the armed forces under the aegis of the Joint Task Force have mounted a blistering crackdown on suspected members of the sect in the Borno State capital, Maiduguri.

Reports say a group which calls itself the Yusuffiya Islamic Movement has said in unverified statements that “people with evil motives have infiltrated our genuine struggle.”

Confirming the development to the Associated Press, the JTF spokesman, Lt. Col. Hassan Mohammed, said his officers had seen statements announcing that the faction had split from Boko Haram.
