De-accreditation: 420 medical students withdrawn from UNIJOS

No fewer than 420 students have been withdrawn from the Department of Medicine and Surgery, faculty of Medical Sciences of the University of Jos, following the de-accreditation of the MBBS programme by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

MDCN in December 2010 suspended the programme following the non-compliance with admission procedure by the university. The authorities were said to have overstretched the admission limit of 150 students per session as prescribed by MDCN and were asked to prune down the number if the programme were to be re-accredited.

It was gathered that in a trimming examination conducted by the school, 230 level one students could not make it while in level two, 198 students failed to make it to the next level.

After the exams, many students rushed to know their fate from the results pasted on the notice board and signed by the Dean, Prof. Nuhu Dakum. While the majority wore long faces, the lucky ones went away smiling.

The notice also asked those who failed, to sign a form indicating their preferred course for re-admission into other departments in the faculty of Natural Sciences.

It was learnt that two of the students who failed to make it attempted suicide.

A mother to one of the affected students, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said for more than two weeks her daughter was depressed and could not eat.

She asked MDCN to intervene in the interest of the depressed students who are uncertain of their future.

The Dean of the faculty, Prof. Nuhu Dakum, told correspondents that there was a problem with the trimming examination carried out by the university.

Dakum said that he had made a proposal to the Vice Chancellor, Prof Hayward Mafuyai, on how to solve the problem, especially on the fate of those who failed to make their courses.

He said, “The department has actually made a proposal on how to solve the problem and it’s awaiting the vice chancellor’s approval.”
