Some of the residents said, on Tuesday, that there was need for a downward review of the fee.
Mathew Ekere, a civil servant, said that the N2, 000 charged for the certificate was exploitative, considering the economic situation in the country.
“We need to let Gov. Okorocha know about the high fee charged which is more than what is obtainable in other state liaison offices,” he said.
Mrs Ijeoma Nwokedi, a petty trader, said the fee was not justifiable. She said that the certificate gave the people a sense of belonging when they go about their legitimate businesses in their places of residence.
“Look at the number of people that besieged the office for the certificate,” she said. “For some of us visiting for the first time, the fee is not the same with what Enugu, Abia and Ebonyi collect. The workers [at the Liaison office] said they are carrying out directives handed down to them by Chief Ikedi Ohakim, the immediate past governor of the state.”
Nwokedi called on the governor to visit Lagos to see things for himself so that he could review some of the existing policies.
In her reaction, the Liaison Officer, Miss Nkiru Sylvanus, said that the complaint was not reported officially to her, adding that the current fee charged was effected in 2009 during Governor Ohakim’s tenure.
“I wish to say that we are operating with what we met on ground,” she said. “We will not go out of our way to do any thing that will hurt our citizens that are resident in Lagos State.
“We are here to meet their needs. We are appealing to the people affected to do a formal letter expressing their grievances to the state governor through the office.
“Before now the fee for the certificate was N500 per copy, but a directive came from the then governor that the fees be moved from N500 to N2000 in 2009.”
