Massob raises alarm over bomb threat

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra has raised the alarm over an alleged plot by Boko Haram to bomb the venue of the South-East Economic Summit in Enugu on Thursday.

The National Director of Information of MASSOB, Mr. Uchenna Madu, in an SMS on Wednesday said MASSOB got wind of the plot through intelligence reports by its agents in Bauchi.

Madu, who was on Monday freed after he was arrested along with 279 members of the group last week, said the planned bombing was to instill fear into the people to pave the way for future onslaught on the South-East.

But he said MASSOB would not be doing anything to save the situation because the organisation was not invited to the summit.

Madu said, “In defence of Igboland from bloodshed, MASSOB wishes to alert the organisers and the guests of the South-East Economic Summit in Enugu to a secret plot by Boko Haram to unleash terror at the venue of the event tomorrow (Thursday).

“Information reaching us through some Biafra Intelligence Agency in Bauchi confirms that the primary aim of the attack is to instill fears into the eastern region which will pave the way for future onslaught in the region.

“According to our trained intelligence unit, the chief initiators of the Igboland terror attack are some northern political/religious leaders who are not comfortable with the unity of purpose, cooperation and the spirit of oneness in Igboland.

“We would have sent MASSOB security men to assist in beefing up security at the venue but we will not because MASSOB was not invited. Yet we cannot fold our hands watching our great Biafran sons and daughters massacred in a single day.

“Though MASSOB is not against Boko Haram and its agitation for Islamic states, they should not carry their bombings in Biafran land as we shall resist it.

The group also called on the Imo State Government to free its members being charged with armed robbery in Owerri in the spirit of the amnesty granted members of the group by President Goodluck Jonathan last week.

Madu said, “As President Jonathan Goodluck has ordered the release of MASSOB members in detention, we wish to remind the Imo State government to release the remaining three MASSSOB members from Onitsha, Anambra State arrested on May 30, 2011, who the police are prosecuting for robbery.”
