WAEC advises candidates on authentic results

The head of the Nigeria office of the West Africa Examination Council, Iyi Uwadie, has advised candidates whose results were recently released, to rely only on results currently on display on its website or the statement of results made available to schools.

Uwadie said this at a news briefing after a meeting with the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, in Abuja, on Friday.

The minister had summoned the WAEC boss to unravel the mystery behind the recent release of conflicting examination results for the same examination.

He said while he did not want to pre-empt the outcome of the investigation, preliminary findings showed that human error was responsible for the confusion.

Uwadie, who apologised to candidates, parents and guardians over the mistake, however, ruled out the suspicion that hackers were responsible.

He told candidates, “Cross check with WAEC before you start using it (result). We have told the nation that the one we pasted on our website on August 10 and we are updating on a daily basis is the authentic result.

“The one that has error is the result that is not authentic and that has been discarded and fortunately, the one that we printed, the hard copies, are the ones that have the correct results which we sent to schools.

“We are telling parents and candidates to rely only on the results on our website or go to the school and collect the statement of result from the principal of the school that has the print out.”

He warned candidates against attempting to use the error-ridden results because they appeared to score higher because universities (and other institutions of higher learning) have access to the website.

Uwadie noted that WAEC had announced that it encountered some problems, as such, it was releasing the results in batches.

He said, “I discovered that when updating and subsequent upgrading, there was a problem. Somebody yet to be identified, because a panel is working on it right now, perhaps used the wrong procedure.

“We have a whole department of quality control; anytime before we release any result, we do quality control.

“I want to assure you and Nigerians that it was not the issue of a hacker or an employee of WAEC trying to be funny.”

The WAEC boss explained that most of the problems encountered by the council were related to candidates failing to properly fill forms or shade answer sheets correctly.

He noted that some candidates failed to write their complete names and numbers.

Earlier, the Minister of State for Education had declared that the event was not acceptable to the government and people of Nigeria, hence the decision to demand an explanation.
