Both sides had previously, clashed in the quarterfinal of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Italy as the South Americans ran away with a 10-8 victory. But the Nigerians were more prepared in Sunday’s game to take their pound of flesh.
Azeez Abu was on rampage right from the first period, netting five goals while captain Isiaka Olawale and Victor Tale had a brace each.
Nigeria coach, Audu Ejo, was elated after the victory, attributing it to keeping to game plan.
He said, “We knew how Brazil beat us at the World Cup but we were determined not to repeat the mistakes. I’m happy for the team for winning the tournament; it will sure serve as an end of the year gift for Nigeria.”
Olawale, who promised Nigerians before the match that the Eagles would keep the trophy in Lagos, said the players were happy to put the World Cup loss behind them.
“This tournament cannot be compared to the World Cup but it serves as the reward for hard work,” the Kwara United player said.
“We were really heartbroken when we lost narrowly to Brazil at the World Cup, but we knew we were better in that game. This Copa Lagos has proven us right.”
Olawale added that Nigeria can get back on the world stage to win the elusive World Cup if there was a league in the country to help the players.
He said, “It doesn’t have to be a league of many clubs; we can start small with about 10 clubs.
“We have the resources and the players to become a big team in this sport. It is an interesting game and I’m happy fans love it.”
South Africa and England also featured in the competition.
