Group demands Okonjo-Iweala, Alison-Madueke’s resignation

The Conscience Reports on Monday called for the immediate resignation of the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Lamido Sanusi; Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; and Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Allison-Madueke.

The group, in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Eneruvie Enakoko, accused the three public officials of allegedly ill-advising the government.

CP also accused them of forcing the policies of the International Monetary Fund on Nigerians.

Enakoko said the group was also demanding the immediate resignation of the President Goodluck Jonathan if he failed to retrace his steps and reverse the policy and imposition of additional burden on Nigerians.

He said members of the group were shocked that Jonathan and his team decided to give Nigerians, who have suffered for so long and “borne the brunt of inept, corrupt and cruel policies of successive administrations since independence, such a callous and wicked package as their gift for the New Year.”

He said, “We are saddened even more given the fact that this government has said it is still consulting with various stakeholders on the need for removal of the subsidy and that even if the subsidy will be implemented, it will not be done until April 1, 2012.

“Unfortunately, this government has defaulted and the Nigerian people are once again the victims of broken promises.

“But we are not at all surprised because the Jonathan administration has shown clearly by its antecedents that it is not a government that listens to the people or one that is aware of the needs of its people.

“On issue after issue, this government has shown that it does not care about the feelings of the people and that it is not ready to lead by the consent or wishes of its people. President Jonathan and his people have been carrying on as if we are not in a democracy; and as if we are an autocracy or a police state.”

The group therefore called on Nigerians across the nation to brace for sustained protests and strikes in the days to come and to cooperate and work with organised labour and civil society groups to end the “onslaught foisted on them by the President and his team.”

It called on the Federal Government to immediately reverse the implementation of the subsidy removal pending when it could adequately convince Nigerians and the global community by superior argument that the fuel subsidy was unsustainable.
