ASUU calls off Nationwide Strike

After months of inactivity in all university campuses nationwide, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Wednesday announced the suspension of its industrial action with immediate effect.

Following a meeting at the University of Abuja, the National Executive Council of the union directed that all university lecturers should go back to work with effect from Thursday 2nd, February, 2012.

ASUU had embarked on the strike action in protest of the Federal Government’s refusal to honour an agreement it reached with it in 2009. Among the demands of the union is the upward review of the retirement age of university teachers from 65 to 70 years and an increase in university funding.

Negotiations between the Federal Government’s representatives and ASUU collapsed twice in the last year.

Indications however had emerged that the strike might be called off after a meeting between the two parties on January 24. After the meeting the representatives of the union announced that progress had been made but that the decision to suspend the strike rests with the National Executive.

Following the announcement of the suspension of the strike, the senate of individual universities are expected to announce the resumption dates for their schools.
