Senate confirms legality of post-UTME test

The Senate has accepted the recommendation of its committee on Education that there is no illegality in the conduct of the Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, conducted by Nigerian universities.

However, it voted for the standardisation of curriculum for the Post-UTME and recommended a gross charge of N6,000 per candidate.

The decision was taken on Thursday when the Senate considered the report of the committee after it investigated the controversies of illegality and irregularities in the conduct of the Post-UTME by universities.

Due to outcry from the public, the Senate, through a motion titled ‘Illegal Subjection of Candidates to examinations by universities after JAMB’ in October 2011, directed the committee to investigate the activities of the universities and the causes of the failure of JAMB.

The report, which was presented by the committee’s Chairman, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, however observed that “the virus of corruption that has debilitated JAMB is creeping into Post UTME.”

The report noted that in the conduct of the Post-UTME, “there are some cases of selective respect for merit, unjustified preferences of candidates with lower marks to those with higher scores, and other irregularities indicating departures from either JAMB’s general guidelines or the university’s selection criteria.”

It pointed out that, in spite of these anomalies, the Post-UTME’s shortcomings were few and isolated when weighed against the massive irregularities in JAMB.

In its recommendations, the committee stated that it could not “sustain any charge of illegality against the Post-UTME. The committee also believes that the inclusion of written tests in screening by universities is legal and legitimate.”
