The Owerri lads defeated hard-fighting Brilliant International Pre-Varsity School, Ondo State by 1-0 to retain the title they won last year in Port Harcourt at the expense of Mbagba-Nanev Community Secondary School, Adikpo, Benue State.
Amputee and the championship most valuable player, Kosisochi Ubalaka strike deep into the second half of the epic grand finale separated the two teams.
En route to the final, coach Rumson Madu's Owerri lads defeated their counterparts from Kano – Government Secondary School, Gwammaja - 4-2 in the semifinal while the Ondo warriors overpowered Government Day Secondary School, Gwadabawa, Yola, Adamawa State 6-4 on penalties after full time score stood at 3-3.
The Adamawa team however rallied round to beat the Kano side 4-1 on penalties after ending the regular time scores at goalless in the loser’s match.
An elated Ubalaka who was unarguably the best player on the pitch told SuperSport.com shortly after their hard-earned victory that he feels comfortable playing with the able-bodied players expressing his desire to pursue his football career to the highest level.
“I am happy we won again and also picking the most valuable player award. I do not feel handicapped, if you ask me it has always been a blessing to my team. I feel comfortable and I intend to pursue my career to professional level,” he said.
Outstanding individuals were rewarded too, as the best goalkeeper award was won by the Owerri side's safehands Emmanuel Iwu, while best defender's gong went to Ondo’s Samuel Akinyemi and Egbaleye Babatunde got away with the best midfielder award.
The highest goal scorer went to Ibrahim Abba of Government Secondary School, Gwammaja, Kano.
He scored eight goals in the annual football fiesta, and of course, Kosisochi Ubalaka from Owerri won the most valuable player award.
The champions got N2.5 million for sports development, runners up got N1.4 million and third place team got N500 000.
Each of the winners’ registered 20 players got N40 000 each.
The match was broadcast live on SuperSport Nine.
