Lagos floods: 7 more corpses recovered

Thousands of residents of Bada, Balogun and Ishefun areas of Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos, Nigeria trapped by flood

Seven more bodies were recovered yesterday, at the Aboru canal in Lagos bringing the number so far fished out to nine.

Two female corpses were recovered on Monday morning after the heavy flood that swallowed some parts of the metropolis. No fewer than 17 others were also confirmed to have died during the downpour. Yesterday hundreds of people thronged the canal to watch local divers fishing for dead bodies.

One of the divers, Wasiu said many more bodies were still missing. He said one of the bodies recovered was that of a man simply identified as Baba Adija.

He said Baba Adija, a commercial motorcyclist (Okada rider) had gone to rescue two of his sons who were swept away by the flood. Wasiu said Baba Adija was unlucky as he was swept away by the flood. The irony of it all was that the two sons were eventually rescued.

He alleged that he and other people had prevailed on Baba Adija to exercise patience and wait for them to fish out the children but he would not listen. He said Baba Adija took everybody by surprise as he jumped into the canal.

As at press time, many families were still searching for their missing ones.
Felicia Ogbebor, who wept uncontrollably believed that her younger sister who had just visited from Edo State was in the canal.
She said her sister had gone to the church but had not returned home.

Another woman, Mary Ojiugo, claimed her husband, Isaac, an Okada rider may had been swept away by the flood.
According to her, she had searched for Isaac but all to no avail. “But one of his colleagues, Anthony told me that he saw him carrying a passenger during the rain around Ipaja area.”
She called on the state government to assist the local divers in the search for the dead ones.
